Having a bug out bag is always a good idea.
My keys were nearby and my cell phone was fully charged. The few firearms I have were easy to grab as well. The only things that caught me by surprise were my paper documents and surprisingly clothing. I keep my important paper documents in a waterproof/fireproof safe, along with my digital backups. These are kept safe enough if there is a small fire, but being in there doesn't do me much good if I have to leave permanently. My solution to this was to place a small messenger bagnear my safe. Should the need arise, I'll be able to toss all my papers and
CD's into the messenger bag and throw it over one shoulder on my way out. I've also now set out an extra set of clothes that I should be able to get on quickly in case there is a need. These were really small changes, but helped to affirm an entireaction plan. I can now practice evacuating my residence with the supplies I'll need. I suggest people look into creating their ownevacuation plan if they haven't already. Mine obviously had a few holes and they have now been fixed.
